The Great Gatsby.
FITZGERALD, F. Scott.
Published by New York: The Modern Library, 1934
8vo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge stained red, pattened endpapers. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the frayed dust jacket with a repaiered split at one fold. First Modern Library Edition; with a new introduction by the author. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author "With best wishes from F. Scott Fitzgerald to his neighbor in Tryon." Additionally annoted in ink by the author at the top margin of the introduction, "Very bad introduction." Recipient's ink inscription on the half-title "Marion B. Greene. Tryon - 1935." Marion Bristow Greene hailed origianlly from Providence, Rhode Island and was in all likelihood staying at the Oak Hall Hotel or very nearby in Tryon, North Carolina at the same time as Fitzgerald in February, 1935, only five months or so after the publication of this edition. Tryon's climate drew visitors who suffered from or feared tuberculosis. This copy is bound in brown cloth, one of several variant colours. Lacking the remainder ("discontinued title") stamp often or even usually found, a poignant reminder of how far the author's reputation and popularity had fallen in such a short time.
