In 2006 Barry made this statement:
"ISBNs were in widespread use by the 1970s, but I don't know precisely
when Random House adopted them."
Perhaps he has gained some new information.
I think the only "first edition" title with an ISBN is the Auden second
edition. My copy has the ISBN, blank end papers, a last copyright of
1970, and a $2.95 price. Barry also said:
"I've never been able to confirm the publication date and give it in my
bibliography as 1971/72"

I don't believe anyone has seen a copy without the ISBN (Joe's has it,
mine, Barry's, etc). So this gives us a no later than date.
