First printings of Brothers Karamazov, Wisdom of Confucius, Pickwick Papers, and History of Tom Jones have the imprint "Modern Library" on the spine of the binding; all later printings have the imprint "Illustrated Modern Library."

I just today bought an illustrated ML Confucius that has a different spine than the one I already had: Slightly smaller font, and has "The Modern Library" at the bottom of the printed portion, rather than "The IllustratedMODERN LIBRARY."

My question is: which is the earlier copy. Both have a 1943 date on the inside.
