Okay, my wife (former teacher, now lawyer, but with a masters degree in European history from the Universite Libre de Bruxelles) looked at the picture and immediately said Erasmus (thus agreeing with several on this list).  Without any such qualifications I thought it might be Sir Thomas More author of Utopia (arguably a socialist precursor).

The quest continues!
