The ModernLib Regular Binding Styles page reports that this style was  
primarily in use November 1930 - May 1931:

ML collectors should ALWAYS verify Guide entries against ModernLib  
entries, the former being a fixed document completed eight years ago  
and the latter being a living system updated constantly.

As to clean splits, with Modern Library such fastidiousness was  
seldom observed.
