[ModLib] A challenge for ML Sinclair Lewis Fans

It appears that this seller is listing numerous alleged "signed" books
-- all suspiciously signed in the same place on the title page. The
Lewis edition was obviously printed after the author died.

For what it is worth, I have had cases involving distribution of forged
sports memorabilia.

The FBI has stated that 90% of the signed sports memorabilia on the
market today is forged. There are actually family businesses which
generate forgeries. Evidence seized from some of these operations shows
how sophisticated they are. They have signature books in which they
collect copies of actual signatures. They will "age" items and make
sure that the correct markings are on the items to be forged, e.g. a
little red stamp on baseballs from the 20's purporting to show that the
ball was made in Haiti. (Obviously, attention to that type of detail
was neglected here). And they will have different family members
specialize in different signatures.

In some of these cases, boxes of "correct baseballs" were being
delivered to the family business for the signature of Satchel Page and
Babe Ruth. There were also team jackets sent for signatures of the
Yankees players, including Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, both of whom
were dead.

Oh well! Caveat emptor!

Best to all,

Bob Sanger
