That's a good answer and along with the poor quality paper, I think we have solved the DJ spine bit.

I checked my copy and it has the same rubbing at the top of the jacket spine. I'm fairly certain this was caused in shipping. So that it could be printed from the original publisher's plates, Lost Weekend was about 1/4 inch taller than the normal ML format. During shipping, copies of Lost Weekend stuck out a bit from other ML books, and books probably rubbed against the top edge of the spine, while the rest of the book was protected by other books.

  I am sure I am wrong about this but, I am going  to ask anyway---
  In my time, I have seen about six copies of,The Lost Weekend., all copies that I have seen, have about 1/4 missing off top spine of DJ.....Can this have anything to do with the size of the book?  Will someone out there tell me that they have a Fine DJ of the book, that will answer my question
