What accounts for this common bookseller mistake?

Pure willful ignorance, not only of the Modern Library, but bookselling in 
general. Wannabe seller is either bizarrely optimistic, delusional, or 
dishonest. Definitely lazy. "Appears to be a first edition" is one degree short of 
"appears to be a reading device" for laughability. Such language would have just 
generated ridicule in an old-fashioned mail catalogue. No excuses.
