The record price for a Modern Library book was set about two years ago, when a Gatsby in the 225-title first issue DJ sold for $1,201 on ebay.

I think you're right about the Fitzgerald angle -- the authorial introduction really drives the demand (a great read!) -- though as I recall, either the high bidder or the underbidder in the case I mentioned was a ML collector.
