I googled this question and found a pretty neat website from an antiquarian
bookseller
www.antcolbks.com/glossary, which defines blindstamping as letters,
decorations, or other marks which have been impressed (usually) in the binding without
further adornment such as gilt or color. It distinguishes between
"blindstamping" and "giltstamping." I wouldn't want to bet the farm on it, but this
makes sense to me.
